Antony issues defiant message after being labelled a ‘clown’ for showboating in Manchester United win

Manchester United winger Antony has vowed to keep on doing his tricks after receiving criticism for a showboating move against FC Sheriff.

While under no pressure from defenders and with the score goalless on Thursday night, the Brazilian performed two spins on the ball before misplacing a through ball into touch.

Former United star Paul Scholes led the negative reaction to Antony’s move, which followed a similar row over Richarlison’s keepy-uppies for Tottenham in recent Premier League action.

Posting a clip of the skill on his Instagram, Antony wrote: “We are known for our art and I won't stop doing what got me to where I am!”

Scholes labelled Antony a “clown” for the move, in particular the wayward pass which came at the end of it, and suggested Erik ten Hag later substituted the United player partly as a result of his action.

“You saw his reaction on the bench,” the 47-year-old told BT Sport. “I think it frustrated him. I just don't know what it achieves. I love a little bit of showboating, and entertainment but at least get the pass right.

“Does that do anything for anybody? Does that do anything for himself? I'd have to ask him - even at 4-0 up what does that do for you?

“This country, any country - even Brazil. They don't want to see that do they? I like to see skills and entertainment, I just don't think it's skill or entertainment... it's just being a clown.”
