Antony Gormley creating giant statue for 400th anniversary of Mayflower

Angel of the North artist Sir Antony Gormley is creating his first public artwork in five years to mark the 400 year anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower.

The sculpture - known as LOOK II - will comprise 22 individual iron blocks that have been cast as one single element to create a twice life-size human-like figure.

Once complete it will weigh three tonnes and stand 3.7 metres tall overlooking the sea in Plymouth, Devon.

It was commissioned by The Box - a new museum set to open in May - to mark 400 years since the Founding Fathers set sail from Plymouth to America.

A spokesman for the Box said: "It will be UK’s first permanent Antony Gormley sculpture in five years and the only permanent Gormley sculpture to be installed anywhere in the UK in 2020.

"Look II, an anthropomorphic cast iron sculpture, will be permanently installed on Plymouth’s famous West Hoe in May this year ahead of The Box opening to the public on May 16th.

"The new sculpture will form part of The Box’s permanent contemporary art collection."

It will be installed on a site that has witnessed hundreds of famous journeys that has shaped Britain, from the Mayflower to journeys led by Darwin, Drake, Sir Walter Raleigh, Shackleton and more recently Greta Thunberg.

Mr Gormley said: “I am delighted by the site and honoured that this work has been commissioned by Plymouth to look out over the sea that has played such an important part in forming the outward-looking character of these islands.”
