Antonio Valencia announces retirement with touching message to Man Utd fans

Antonio Valencia has called time on his playing career in football after almost 20 years in the sport, 10 of which were spent at Manchester United.

In a touching message to Manchester United fans on social media announcing the news,, Valencia wrote: "At the age of 14, as a child, I left my village and my first team to travel to the capital of my country. I travelled with a lot of nostalgia bug full of hope.

"A few years later I was able to travel to Europe, something I had never dreamed of. I played in Spain, and then came to my second home: England.

"Wigan was a unique experience, and then God gave me the opportunity to join Manchester United. I will never forget everything I experienced at Old Trafford.

"I will never forget every goal, every trophy and the wonderful fans.

"I did not think this moment would come so soon, but my body has asked me to make this decision. I am announcing my retirement from football. I want to thank everyone who has been part of my career and life. God in the first place, for always blessing me. Zoila and my daughter Domenik who have been my pillars. My parents for giving me so much.

"To fans of all the countries where I have played, I always tried to give my best. Thank you for your affection and support."

Valencia joined the Red Devils in 2009 as a £16m addition following the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid.

The Ecuadorian was known best for playing in right-midfield for Wigan, but due to his lack of trickery and agility combined with an incredible work rate and crossing ability, it became clear to Sir Alex Ferguson after a couple of seasons that he should perhaps play a more defensive role.

It was there he thrived, winning Fans and Players’ Player of the Season at United in Ferguson’s penultimate campaign, before being handed the no. 7 shirt, and later becoming captain under Jose Mourinho, who boldly labelled him the "best right-back in the world".

During his time at United as they went through a real phase of transition, Valencia won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups, three Community Shields and the Europa League.

The Ecuadorian also earned 99 caps for his country across a span of 15 years, scoring 11 goals and appearing at two World Cups.
