Antonio Rudiger's heartwarming gesture to nurses continues Chelsea's great work during shutdown

Antonio Rudiger has committed to covering the catering costs of frontline staff at the Berlin hospital that he was born in for the next three months after the Chelsea centre back asked how he could help during the coronavirus pandemic.

The 27-year-old is already part of the Players Together campaign to donate money to NHS charities and last month made an unspecified donation to Chelsea's foundation wing along with his team-mates.

Rudiger is also expected to take a pay cut at Chelsea following amicable talks between the first-team squad and club, though final details have not yet emerged.

The decision to help the Berlin Charite hospital came after he asked "how and where I can best support," according to local reports in Germany. He started covering the costs since before Easter.

"Even though I now live in London, Berlin is still a very special city for me," he said.

"When I have free time, I am still often there. I have a lot to thank Berlin for, so I'm happy to help out now.”

Chelsea players, led by captain Cesar Azpilicueta, held talks over a paycut. They are holding out for less than the 30% recommended by the Premier League.

Frank Lampard and his coaching staff are expected to take cuts, too, but those negotiations are taking place separately.

The club have taken strong action to help frontline workers and charities during the pandemic, including opening the Millennium Hotel at Stamford Bridge to NHS staff between shifts. They are also working alongside charities such as Refuge and Age UK, with owner Roman Abramovich key behind the initiatives.
