Antonio Rudiger makes Romelu Lukaku admission as defender solidifies Chelsea starting position

Antonio Rudiger has admitted that Romelu Lukaku is stronger than him, but says the two are on par when it comes to speed.

The German centre-back has enjoyed a fantastic start to the new Premier League season, and has solidified his place in Chelsea’s starting XI after some excellent performances in the Blues' defence.

A resolute display alongside Thiago Silva and Andreas Christensen against Liverpool on Saturday earned 10-man Chelsea a well-fought point at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp's side couldn't find a way through in the second-half.

Meanwhile, Lukaku has settled in quickly at Stamford Bridge since his club record £97.5million move from Inter Milan, scoring in a debut win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on August 22.

It is easy to see why the Blues were prepared to spend big on the Belgian, however, as they have got a proven goalscorer who is also in peak physical condition - something Rudiger clearly agrees with.

"In terms of acceleration, I think there is a lot of players who are maybe faster than me," the Germany international told Sky Sports when asked about the fastest players at Chelsea.

"But when we [hit top speed], I think I will go for myself or Romelu Lukaku."

Rudiger was also asked who is the stronger of the two, a question he found a little amusing.

"Come on, this question is [disrespectful]," Rudiger continued. "Of course, he’s stronger!

"100% [him], look at the guy and look at me [he laughed]. Rom, every day."

The 28-year-old went onto admit that Lukaku has matured into a great person and player, something which will only benefit Chelsea in the future.

"I’ve known him [before he had joined Chelsea], he’s very calm," Rudiger added.

"You can see he has grown as a person. There is a lot of confidence - not arrogance, but good confidence."

The Blues are undefeated in the league so far, and will be hoping to make an early move in the title race after the international break, starting with a win over Aston Villa on September 11.
