Antonio Rudiger explains role in Timo Werner transfer and hopes to do same with Kai Havertz

Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger has dropped a strong hint that Kai Havertz is on his way to Stamford Bridge after joking about convincing him to join the Blues.

The Bayer Leverkusen winger has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea following his impressive performances in the Bundesliga last season, in which he scored 12 goals and created six assists.

Rudiger has already helped to persuade his former Stuttgart teammate Timo Werner to join him in west London, and is now trying to do the same with his international teammate Havertz.

And speaking ahead of Germany's upcoming Nations League games against Spain and Switzerland, Rudiger seemed confident Havertz's long-awaited move will soon be made official.

"Everything went well with Timo Werner, so I made my contribution," he said. "And I hope that it works again now (with Havertz)."

It is believed the finishing touches are being put towards the huge £90m deal to take Havertz to Chelsea, and he would become their fifth major signing of what has been an impressive summer in which they have added Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva to their ranks.

Rudiger is clearly a huge fan of Havertz, and even admitted back in July that he was desperate for the 21-year-old to make the move to the Premier League.

He told Sky Germany: "Kai is talented, when I saw him train with the Germany national team I was like, “Wow!”

"I would be lying to you if I said I didn’t want him at Chelsea."

It is certainly a signing which would excite Blues fans, who may begin to start dreaming they may be able to challenge for major honours next season.

They kick off their new Premier League campaign with a trip to Brighton on September 14 before facing a difficult first home game of the season against reigning champions Liverpool on September 20.
