Antonio Conte has backed Harry Kane to put his penalty miss behind him as Tottenham return to Premier League action.

The England captain, who equalled Wayne Rooney’s all-time record of 53 goals for the Three Lions at the World Cup, could not convert his second spot-kick of the game as Gareth Southgate’s fell to beaten finalists France at the quarter-final stage.

Usually so reliable from the spot, it was one of only 11 penalties the 29-year-old has failed to score in 69 attempts.

Kane is eyeing a quick-fire return to club duty and is in line to feature against London rivals Brentford at Boxing Day as the Spurs star looks to lead their Champions League push in the second half of the season.

“Hugo [Lloris] lost the final and, instead, Cuti [Cristian Romero] won the final,” said the Spurs boss.

“For Harry, he missed a penalty, but I think he played a really good World Cup.

"For sure, they have to try and put to one side this experience.”

Conte’s side sit fourth in the Premier League table, three points ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United but having played one more game.
