Antonio Conte set to become Tottenham manager as Manchester United continue to back Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Antonio Conte is expected to become the next Tottenham manager after Manchester United decided against moving for the Italian.

A source close to Conte says Spurs and United have ‘different ideas’ regarding their managerial situation.

Sources familiar with negotiations have suggested it is a matter of time until an agreement is struck between Conte and his agent, Federico Pastorello.

Conte was interviewed by Tottenham in the summer following the sacking of Jose Mourinho but both parties failed to come to an agreement.

On the strength of Conte’s interview, Spurs were convinced they needed a coach with passion and considered Rino Gattuso before they eventually returned to Nuno Espírito Santo, who was initially discounted as he was deemed expensive and his style of play off-putting.

The Manchester Evening News revealed last week Conte was open to replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but had reservations over the structure of the club. Conte would have wanted autonomy on signings and was not prepared to tolerate having ‘marketing’ players foisted onto him.

Senior board figures at United are ‘not keen’ on Conte and the club made no approach last week.
