Antonio Conte's assistant opens up on Jose Mourinho spat as pair prepare to renew rivalry

Antonio Conte's former assistant coach Angelo Alessio has lifted the lid on the Italian's spat with Jose Mourinho, with the pair set to renew their rivalry in Serie A.

Conte is currently in charge of Inter Milan and he has led them to their first Scudetto in 11 years, while Mourinho is set to take charge of Roma next season.

The pair clashed during their time as Premier League rivals, with Conte managing Chelsea and Mourinho managing Manchester United.

Alessio was Conte's assistant at Stamford Bridge and he has spoken to Football Italia about the rivalry, saying: "They are a bit similar.

"They have strong characters and maybe that can be one of the reasons why they clashed. I remember we beat Manchester United and Mourinho was upset due to Antonio’s celebration.

"They continued to taunt each other for some time after that. Sometimes things get blown out of proportion. There were not pleasant words between them, but it all began with a misunderstanding.

"That time, Mourinho was annoyed with Conte’s celebration, but that’s what Antonio always does. Everyone knows that, it was a regular celebration for him.

"They are smart people, so in the end, they cleared the air. Now they respect each other and I am sure we’ll see that when they meet next season."

Mourinho took shots at Conte's antics on the touchline, his hair transplant and his 2012 suspension for match fixing.

Conte, meanwhile, suggested Mourinho was suffering from 'demenza senile', an Italian phrase which translates as senile dementia. He also repeatedly called his rival a "little man" in a now infamous interview.

When asked about Mourinho's appointment as Roma boss earlier this week, Conte said he was looking forward to going up against him once more.

"Look… Mourinho coming back to Italy is certainly good news for everyone," he said. "I wish him the best, apart from when he will play against Inter."
