Antonio Conte reveals what Leeds United did which scared him during Spurs defeat

Marcelo Bielsa and Antonio Conte met in opposing dug-outs for the first time in their managerial careers on Sunday afternoon as Leeds United paid a visit to Tottenham Hotspur.

Conte is new in the hotseat at Spurs, but has wasted little time in geeing up his squad and the club's support with his passionate and vivid celebrations, as well as more appealing football.

Prior to the 2-1 victory over Leeds, Spurs were the Premier League's second-lowest scorers; only Norwich City had scored fewer this season.

The north London side did not register a single shot on target during the first half against Leeds, a run which was threatening to be extended further as the opening 45 minutes wore on.

At half-time, Conte admitted he changed his plans of how to deal with Leeds, opting to fight fire with fire, obliging his team to undertake a more front-footed approach, pressing Leeds at their own game.

After the game, Conte was asked whether he feels he needs more from his players, from a physical standpoint.

His answer was as complimentary to Leeds as it was revealing: "That's true, at the start of the game, I was scared, I was afraid of this aspect. In these three weeks we have worked also on the physical aspect but we work with the player that we have with us and the rest of the players were with the national team.

"For sure we need to improve," he added. "I like to play with intensity."

"If you want to beat Leeds you have to beat them in what they are good at."

Despite the fact Bielsa and Conte had not previously faced each other, the Italian was well-versed in how the Argentine likes his teams to play.

"In the first half we struggled a lot because they played better than us and they won the tackle," Conte said, appraising the opening 45 minutes.

"In the first half we conceded the possession, in the second we change the plan tactically and we start to put pressure and to go in every area of the pitch to put pressure and we created difficulty for Leeds."
