Antonio Conte makes Steven Bergwijn admission that hints at Brentford selection decision

Antonio Conte praised Steven Bergwijn in his pre-match press conference ahead of Tottenham's Premier League clash against Brentford.

Bergwijn has made just nine appearances for Spurs so far this season, starting only three Premier League games and making two substitute cameos.

The Dutch international has had a very stop-start beginning to this campaign as he has struggled with injuries and then was absent for the Lilywhites' trip to Slovenia.

Spurs lost their most recent match 2-1 to NS Mura and will have had a week to prepare for their London derby, after the game against Burnley was postponed due to bad weather.

After registering an assist in the opening game of the season, in Tottenham's 1-0 win over Man City, the Dutchman has struggled to get regular game time when he has been available.

Bergwijn is competing with the likes of Lucas Moura for a place in the starting XI and with the Brazilian remaining at Hotspur Way for all of the international breaks, he has been able to work his work and remain fit for Spurs' matches.

The 24-year-old was an unused substitute in all of Conte's opening three games but missed out on the matchday squad in Slovenia due to illness.

Bergwijn's return to the squad came just before the third international break of the season, which was a successful one for the Dutch international.

In Holland's 2-0 win against Norway, the winger scored a goal and got an assist in a crucial game for his country.

In his pre match press conference on Wednesday, Conte spoke about Bergwijn and his potential return to the Spurs squad.

"We are talking about a player that has important skills and it was a pity for me, not for the national team because he scored in qualifying for Holland, but I would have liked to have had him during the two weeks of the international break to know him much better," he admitted.

"For sure though he has great quality, quality in one-on-one, fast, quality to beat the man and also to score.

"Now we are working and he is understanding what I want of him. For me, he is one of the striker and he can play in any of the three positions.

"Surely he is a player that I have to make an important evaluation but he is in my squad and I count on him. Tomorrow he is available for the squad," the Italian added.

"Against Mura he had a problem otherwise he should play. Tomorrow he is ready and I count on him."

That is good news for both Bergwijn and fans to hear and the fact the Spurs boss has confidence in the Dutchman's ability can only be positive.

Tottenham have only scored 11 goals in 12 Premier League fixtures, which has been a mixture of not taking goal scoring opportunities but also a lack of service provided to the forwards - Harry Kane in particular.

Conte has explained that Bergwijn would fit in the attacking line of his favoured 3-4-3 formation and although he only scored one goal and registered three assists in 21 league appearances last season, the 52-year-old will hope those statistics can be improved upon Bergwijn's return.

There is still work for the 24-year-old to do but he may be hoping to get some game time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in Spurs' London derby against Brentford on Thursday.
