Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's future as Manchester United manager looks to be in serious doubt, with former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte open to taking charge at Old Trafford.
United 's poor campaign reached new depths on Sunday, as they were hammered 5-0 by rivals Liverpool on their own patch.
The defeat and the embarrassing manner of it has led to further calls from some sections of the United fanbase for Solskjaer to be relieved of his duties.
Despite spending big to secure Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane in the summer, the Red Devils have lost three and drawn one of their last four Premier League matches and are eight points back on league leaders Chelsea.
MEN understands United have discussed the possibility of sacking Solskjaer and Conte would be open to taking charge at Old Trafford despite some concerns over the structure of the club.
Conte is one of the most decorated managers in the modern game, having managed Juventus to three Serie A titles and Chelsea to Premier League and FA Cup success. He also took Inter Milan to the Italian top-flight prize last season before leaving the club in the summer.
Conte offered an insight into his coaching style during an interview at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai in 2013, when he said he learned a lot from playing alongside iconic playmakers like Zinedine Zidane and Roberto Baggio.
"I did not have Zinedine Zidane or Roberto Baggio's talent as a player, and I have played with both, that even when they were circled they could try to break through or create interesting situations with the ball," said the Italian, via FourFourTwo.
"When I was a player, my efforts and work-rate, my willingness to sacrifice fitness and humility made up for my lack of pure talent but sometimes, if I didn't find a teammate next to me, I might lose the ball.
"As a manager, my first thought from day one was that I wanted to find solutions for my players when the ball reached them, as I could not.
"If my players don't understand something, I force the player to ask me why we are doing such movement or working on certain tactics in training both offensively or defensively. I always want my players to be fully understanding of the problem. I want them to understand why we are doing certain things and why those things are useful."
