Antonio Conte dilemma highlights major Tottenham issue Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy must solve

Antonio Conte has a decision on his hands when it comes to who starts up front in Tottenham's FA Cup third round tie against Morecambe.

Set to be Spurs' fifth game in the space of two weeks following three Premier League fixtures over the Christmas period and a Carabao Cup semi-final showdown at Chelsea, Sunday's match against the League One side gives the head coach the ideal opportunity to change his team up.

A number of the Spurs first team have played a lot of football over the past fortnight, with Hugo Lloris, Davinson Sanchez, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Lucas Moura just some of the stars who could do with a breather ahead of a big month for the club.

Harry Kane, who has netted two goals in his last four appearances, is also in the same boat but the Lilywhites' lack of another out-and-out striker will now hand Conte a dilemma going into the tie against the Shrimps.

Revealing at the start of December that Steven Bergwijn can act as Kane's understudy and play as a frontman, the Dutchman has been suffering with a calf injury recently and has not featured for the team since the 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on Boxing Day.

Asked by football.london about the attacker's availability ahead of the Carabao Cup defeat against Chelsea, Conte stated that they needed to pay "more attention" due to the injury he sustained.

Providing a further update on the ex-PSV man to football.london when speaking in his pre-match press conference for the Morecambe FA Cup game, the head coach indicated that his player's feeling is good and the expectation is that he will be back very soon.

"I spoke with Steven today and his feeling is good. He’s improving day by day, step by step," said the 52-year-old.

"My expectation and the medical department's expectation is to come back very soon. We need to help him. Also we had a problem with Son during the game against Chelsea.

"It will be very important to recover Steven Bergwijn."

Sunday's game against Morecambe may possibly come too soon for the 24-year-old to make his comeback but his return will come as a timely boost following the news that Son Heung-min now faces a couple of weeks on the sidelines due to an injury he picked up in the defeat at Chelsea.

Conte also indicated in his press conference that Kane is likely to get a rest as Spurs can take that risk this weekend, thus leaving him with a call to make over who replaces the England captain in the XI.

Perhaps a simple decision if Bergwijn was fully fit, the head coach isn't exactly blessed with options due to the club's failure to sign another striker last summer after Carlos Vinicius and Gareth Bale's loan moves were not made permanent.

One option for Conte will be to give youngster Dane Scarlett a chance from the off against the Lancashire-based side.

Handed appearances off the bench here and there by Jose Mourinho last season, Nuno Espirito Santo elected to start the 17-year-old in three Europa Conference League games earlier in the term but he more often than not cut a frustrated figure in attack with very little service coming his way.

Scarlett also struggled coming up against seasoned professionals due to his lack of experience and Conte may think twice about a start for him as Morecambe's backline certainly won't take any prisoners.

Making Conte's matchday squad on two separate occasions since the managerial change, Scarlett will very much be in contention to be included as part of the plans on Sunday and he will be hoping to take to the pitch for the first time since their European defeat away at Vitesse.

The lack of an out-and-out striker could potentially see Dele Alli be utilised further forward and operate in the middle of a front three if the boss chooses to give Lucas a much-needed rest.

A player with knowledge of finding the right spaces in the area and someone who knows where the back of the net is, Conte could indeed plump for the 25-year-old as his frontman given the lack of options.

While injuries and a rest for Kane need to be taken into consideration, Conte's limited options only highlight the need to bring in a new striker in the January transfer window.

It's now down to Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici to ensure that happens.
