Antonio Conte can repeat Chelsea trick to help get Tottenham firing again amid Carabao Cup loss

Tottenham suffered a 2-0 defeat in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea on Wednesday night.

An early goal from Blues forward Kai Havertz was followed up by a humiliating, self-inflicted own goal where Japhet Tanganga headed the ball onto Ben Davies, who could do nothing to stop it finding its way into the Spurs net.

Tottenham didn't record a shot on target in open play until the 88th minute of the game, and although they're by no means out of the tie, they've been left with a mountain to climb going into next week's second leg.

Conte has undoubtedly made an impact at Spurs since his arrival in November - which is emphasised by the fact that the north Londoners are only two points off the top four places in the Premier League with two games in hand - but the performance against Chelsea is worryingly familiar.

As the club are without silverware since 2008, the Italian has partly been brought into end Tottenham's trophy drought, but the loss signifies a difficult start to that endeavour.

Nevertheless, he's turned it around on several occasions in the past, including when he was last in England at Chelsea.

A change of formation and attitude after a crushing 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates in September 2016 helped spark a title-winning charge for the Blues.

Conte's not going to be able to do the exact same at Spurs, but if his previous words are anything to go by, he'll be able to adapt until he achieves success at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

"Against Arsenal this game was frustrating for me - I didn't see nothing of my work, my idea of football in that moment," he said back in May 2017, via the Evening Standard, after Chelsea had secured the Premier League title with a 1-0 win over West Brom.

"I found the strength to change and take the responsibility to change the system and I think it was the key moment for us. Every single player found in this system the best of themselves.

"If you asked me if we'd have this type of season, I'd say no. When you arrive after a bad season, it means there are a lot of problems. To find the right solution and quickly it wasn't easy. This result is because of the attitude of my players."
