Antonio Conte admits Tottenham and Manchester United are at ‘different levels’ after Old Trafford defeat

Antonio Conte admitted his side deserved nothing against Man United

Antonio Conte was left frustrated as his “struggling” Tottenham side produced another meek display in a big match away from home.

Spurs never got going as Manchester United cruised to a 2-0 win, with the scoreline flattering the visitors as Hugo Lloris produced a string of saves to prevent his side falling to a heavier defeat.

While it is only the second defeat Tottenham have suffered this season, the first came against Arsenal in the north Londond derby and the manner of the performance at Old Trafford continued that pattern of failing to deliver against their big-six rivals.

The Spurs boss insisted the club are unable to compete with United when it comes to spending, but admitted his side have to produce more in these matches.

“I consider United a really good team,” Conte told Amazon Prime Sport.

“You know very well the potential of this club, what they did in the transfer market and what money they can spend. For sure we are speaking about two different levels.

“At the same time, I think in this type of game we can do much better. We are struggling. We struggled against Chelsea, we struggled against Arsenal, we struggled today against United.”

Erik ten Hag’s side managed 19 shots in the first-half despite it being goalless at the break, but took the lead with just over a minute played of the second-half as Fred’s deflected strike found the bottom corner and Bruno Fernandes then sealed the win.

Conte had no complaints with the result, as his side missed out on the chance to close the gap to Arsenal at the top of the table to just one point.

“United deserved to win, they played a really good game,” the Tottenham boss said.

“For our side, in this type of game when the level has got to be high, we need to improve a lot. We have to try to be better than today.”
