Antonio Colak to Rangers transfer latest as Giovanni van Bronckhorst eyes attacking options

Rangers could be set to add to their attacking ranks with the signing of PAOK striker Antonio Colak as Giovanni van Bronckhorst bids to add more firepower during the summer window.

The 28-year-old is a familiar face to the Light Blues support as he fired twice for Malmo in the summer of 2021 as Steven Gerrard's side were dumped out of the Champions League at the qualifying stages by the Swedes. He is currently plying his trade in Greece with reports from the country claiming an opening bid for the striker has been knocked back.

A second approach to land the hitman is not imminent but its understood that Van Bronckhrost remains interested in a move. Key man Alfredo Morelos missed a chunk of last season after requiring surgery on his thigh for an injury suffered on international duty. Kemar Roofe also spent time on the sidelines with a few niggles leaving Fashion Sakala and Cedric Itten - who has since left for BSC Young Boys - as the only recognised strikers.

Morelos is yet to come to an agreement on an extended contract at Rangers with Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo and Ryan Jack in the same situation as the Colombian.

Speaking about Colak and why he holds him in such high regard, PAOK boss Razvan Lucescu said: "Antonio gives 150 per cent to training and to games. It makes no difference to him whether he starts or comes on as a sub, his work rate is the same.

"He is one of the most hard-working players I have ever been involved with. I have only good things to say about him.

"It doesn't matter what league Antonio plays in, he would score goals anywhere he plays. When he returned to us after his loan spell in Sweden, you would have perhaps expected his confidence to have dropped slightly because he had problems here when he first signed. But he quickly showed that wasn't true and is a hugely important player for us.

"He's quick, smart and good with the ball at his feet. There are so many ways he can break up a defence. In Greek football, we play against teams that do not give much space and you have to create it and he is excellent at doing that. He is a player who has my complete trust."

Van Bronckhorst has already brought in John Souttar from Hearts after the defender penned a pre-contract at the start of the year.

Connor Goldson also handed the Dutchman a major pre-season boost by putting pen to paper on a long-term contract extension.

Veteran trio Steven Davis, Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield have also signed up for next term.
