Antonio Callaway worked hard in Cleveland Browns minicamp this week. The Browns second-year wideout gets little recognition as the spotlight shines on more heralded teammates Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry and others.
That’s OK by Callaway. Working outside the spotlight suits No. 11 well.
“I’m used to being the underdog,” Callaway said after Thursday’s practice. “I’ve got that underdog mentality.”
Callaway relishes the role, too. “I love it. I love being the underdog. I’ve always been the underdog.”
He played that role well in his rookie season. Callaway caught 43 passes for 586 yards and scored five touchdowns, outstanding production for a fourth-round pick
Of course, Callaway was projected to go much higher than that before his career at Florida went off the rails. He was suspended for his final season and faced tough questions about his character and maturity. That helps play into his underdog mentality.
Thus far, the Browns and the speedy wide receiver are better for it. But if Callaway hits the goals he stated for 2019 — 1,000 yards and 10 total TDs between receiving and special teams — the underdog will become a top Dawg.
