Antonio Brown’s tweet about his return to the NFL backfired spectacularly

Free agent wide receiver Antonio Brown hasn’t played since Week 2 after the Patriots released him amid a lawsuit alleging sexual assault.

Since then, it’s been a hectic few months for the All-Pro receiver. Earlier in the week, it seemed that the league was paving a path for Brown’s return to the NFL with a meeting scheduled for Thursday. Within hours of the news of that meeting, Brown fired off a tweet that ripped the league and claimed he’d never play in the NFL again.

He eventually walked back on that tweet, but now, he’s going straight to the people — the NFL fans.

On Sunday, Brown apparently wanted to gauge fan interest in his potential return (or show the NFL that fans wanted him back in the league). His tweet, which went with a retweet-like structure rather than a native Twitter poll, didn’t exactly work out the way Brown would have hoped.

After a few hours, 10,600 more fans wanted Brown to sit out this season than those who wanted him to return this year.

Others simply used the tweet as an opportunity to roast the free agent receiver.
