An Italian man who went missing for more than two months in East London has been found safe and well.

Antonino Coppola, 23, was last seen leaving Bow Road tube station in the direction of Mornington Grove on September 26.

Mr Coppola, from Positano on the Amalfi coast, had told his friend he felt unwell and left him with his luggage as he searched for a bathroom.

Tower Hamlets and Richmond Police launched a joint search for the young man. His disappearance was described by family as “out of character”.

Writing on a Facebook group of Italians living in London, his father Vincenzo Coppola said last week: “Hello everyone, given your collaboration, it is right that I tell you this before you know it from other sources.

"The police found Antonino last night, but due to reasons of privacy and security, they have not told us anything at the moment, only that he is fine. I have no words to thank you."

Leaflets bearing Antonino’s photo had been circulated across East London, with the family issuing a series of appeals in the past six weeks.

No further information has been released regarding his disappearance.

Richmond Police confirmed the news on Twitter, writing: “Missing 23-year-old Antonino has been found safe and well. Thanks for your shares, comments and retweets.”

During the search, Mr Coppola’s brother Niko told the BBC that his family had so many questions about the “surreal” situation.

"My brother was really close to my parents. They were in contact everyday," he said.

"They had spoken to him just the day before and he was fine."
