Antoine Semenyo sends farewell message as his Sunderland loan comes to an end

Antoine Semenyo has posted a farewell message to Sunderland as his loan spell on Wearside comes to an end.

After Tuesday's decision to curtail the League One season, Semenyo's loan deal was officially concluded, with the player returning to parent club Bristol City.

Confirming his departure, Semenyo took to Instagram to thank Sunderland for his time at the club.

He wrote: "Unfortunately my time with Sunderland is over. Thank you to the fans, staff and players for everything and wish you guys all the best."

Semenyo, 20, joined the Black Cats on loan during the January transfer window as Phil Parkinson looked to add some pace and athleticism to his forward line.

But with Chris Maguire and Lynden Gooch in such strong form, the young Bristol City prospect struggled to have as big an impact as he would have no doubt liked to on Wearside.

He made seven appearances in total, but started just the one game and failed to register a goal or an assist in that time.

But that does not tell the whole story on his spell at the Stadium of Light, with the youngster regularly used from the bench in the later stages of games where he wasn't given the best opportunities to have any impact on games.

Despite that, he did manage to show flashes of his ability with some tricky runs down the wings, while he was Sunderland's only danger in his only start - what turned out to be their final game of the season in a 2-0 defeat to Bristol Rovers.

Having broke into the team and impressed that night, Semenyo would have hoped with eight games remaining in the season plus potentially another three in the play-offs, he may have been able to start showing his best form.

Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic has put paid to that and Semenyo has returned to Bristol City.
