Antoine Griezmann transfer: Atletico Madrid to fine French forward after pre-season no-show ahead of Barcelona move

Atletico Madrid are set to fine Antoine Griezmann after his failure to show up for pre-season training ahead of his protracted move to Barcelona.

The Frenchman announced he would leave the Wanda Metropolitano after five years at the club.

And the La Liga champions are expected to complete a move for the 28-year-old, paying his €120 million (£107.5 million) release clause.

That comes after Atletico rejected the possibility of accepting the sum in instalments, with the saga straining relations between the player and the club.

Griezmann was ordered to report for pre-season on Sunday, with the group travelling to Los Angeles de San Rafael.

But his failure to report has left the club enraged, and ESPN confirm the club are pursuing disciplinary proceedings, which could see the player fined up to €200,000.

"Logically a disciplinary process will be opened as Griezmann did not present himself for an official call-up with the club where he is under contract," the Atletico source told ESPN FC on Monday.

The bad blood played out with Atletico announcing new signing Joao Felix would take Griezmann's No 7 jersey.

While the club have grown suspicious that negotiations, or even an agreement, with Barcelona took place throughout the closing months of the season, distracting the player as they battled for the Champions League and La Liga.

The player last played for France on June 11, meaning he is not legally obliged to report to his club, with a 30-day holiday permitted.
