Antiques Roadshow viewers haunted by 'nightmare-inducing' cat in a hat trinket

Antiques Roadshow viewers were left shaken this evening after a member of the public produced a haunting old trinket.

The man brought on an entirely inconspicuous red hat, placing it before expert Hilary Kay for examination.

The crowd waited with baited breath for Hilary to pass judgement when the hat started to play a childish tune, a doll of cat slowly rising from it.

With its wonky eyes and tongue which flicked back and forth, viewers were truly spooked by the bizarre children's toy.

"Omg that cat in the hat is nightmare-inducing #antiquesroadshow," one wrote.

Another tweeted: "Cat in a hat. No thanks. #antiquesroadshow."

A third saw the lighter side, laughing: "My dog has just attacked the TV. Living, mechanical, whatever, she hates them cats."

Even the man who brought it along had to admit it was unsettling after his daughter's had branded it "the creepy cat."

Hilary, though, didn't seem fazed, gushing: "It's such a great object!

"A purchase, or an inheritance, or a find?"

He replied: "It's been in the family, I think, since it was originally bought.

"We're not quite sure how long that is but it was a great-great-aunt of mine."

Host Fiona Bruce told the Mirror last month that fans need not go without the show after most TV was hit hard by the coronavirus crisis.

While most shows are filmed with around 5000 people in attendance, but the number will have to slashed to just a few hundred as the BBC implements social distancing measures to keep guests and presenters safe.

"We've come up with a new way to film the show," she told us, "yet still bring you amazing objects and stories.

"I can't wait to see what treasures you have hidden in your homes."
