Antiques Roadshow guest stunned as £10 jug is actually 200 years old

An Antiques Roadshow guest's jaw hit the floor when she found out how much her £10 jug was really worth.

The guest had only dipped into their purse for a tenner to buy the jug originally before she uncovered its true worth at the show at Newby Hall in North Yorkshire.

During Sunday's episode, antiques expert Lars Tharp shocked the guest when he said the jug was worth up to £200.

He said: "If you wanted to buy another one today I think you’d have to pay between £100 to £200."

She responded: "Thank you very much, I’m really pleased to find out about it."

Not only was it worth up to 20 times what she paid for it, the expert claimed the jug could date back to 1790.

He said: "It’s about 1800 more likely to be 1790 than 1800."

As a self-confessed lover of horses, the guest said she was attracted to the jug because of the design.

She said: "I bought it quite a long time ago because I’ve been involved in horses all my life and I was intrigued by the decoration on it.

"I have shod a horse in the dim and distant past under extreme supervision."

The expert lifted the lid on the jug's history as he believed it was made for a blacksmith.

"And that to me suggests undoubtedly this piece was made for a blacksmith," said the expert.

"The glaze itself is a lead glaze – blueish in tone because it’s got a little bit of iron in it and it has a generic name, pearl wear pearly blue.

"I think this is Staffordshire so it’s not moved very far from its home."

Damage on the jug didn't appear to take away from its value.

He added: "Unfortunately working with a blacksmith can be dangerous.

"This jug has seen its fair share of violence, you’ve got a break to the spout but that’s about all I can’t see any other the damage there."
