Antiques Roadshow guest unknowingly brings £13k jewels in carrier bag

An expert on Antiques Roadshow was shocked by a guest who brought £13,000 worth of jewels in a carrier bag.

Geoffrey Munn was very excited by the prospect of valuing personal items from the Russian Royal Family.

But he was stunned to learn how the pieces were transported to the Antiques Roadshow site in Edinburgh.

He asked the guest: "Well I understand that you've brought me two royal jewels in a carrier bag today."

She said: "Yes, it seemed like the best way to take them down here."

The guest explained that whilst doing her family tree in lockdown, her grandma took the jewels out of the cupboard and explained how the Grand Duke Mikhailovich gave the jewels to Lady Zia, Countess Torby and she passed them onto her great, great aunt, Mary Thane.

Geoffrey said the pieces were 'very desirable bits of jewellery'.

He said: "It's dicey, because when the connection with Lady Zia is firmed up and the friendship with Mary, I think that would add quite considerably to the value if they were to go to auction.

"I'm thinking, under those circumstances, probably the amethyst brooch and diamonds - £5,000.

"And that's not the end of it, really, because this one [pearl and diamond brooch] may well be made by one of the great firms in Paris, Van Cleef & Arpels or Cartier perhaps.

"I'm going to go for Tiffany, but I can't prove it.

"So it's a bit back to front, but I'm going to say £7,000 or £8,000 for that."

But viewers at home were baffled after the valuation that the guest used a carrier bag.

Clare tweeted: "Amethyst 5k. Open work platinum broach with diamond and pearls 7-8k. STUNNING. Brought in a carrier bag", followed by a cry-laughter emoji.

Monk joked: "£13,000 and 10p including the bag."

And North asked: "Lidl or Waitrose carrier bag?"
