Antiques Roadshow guest stunned at value of police helmet worn by John Lennon

A daughter was stunned when she found out how much her dad's police helmet, that had been worn by John Lennon, was worth.

The woman showed off the family heirloom on the Antiques Roadshow and explained that her late father, Ivor Gordon Russell, had escorted The Beatles in the Birmingham Hippodrome.

She told expert Marc Allum that a sergeant came up with an idea of dressing the band members as police officers to help escort them into the venue through the crowd, with the subsequent pictures becoming world-famous - reports the Daily Star.

The guest said: " John Lennon wore my father's helmet and the paparazzi were out and took pictures, and they got them into the theatre without any problems."

She showed off the picture to Marc which shows her father standing behind the group while the four members of The Beatles wear the navy felt police hats and salute their fans.

She said: "The Beatles were so easy-going, and at that time, were such fun because my father told us that they were great company.

"The inspector who was in charge of them invited them back at his house for tea."

Marc delivered his opinion on the memorabilia and said: "So this is an object with a great deal of provenance. This is the actual helmet in that photograph on John Lennon's head.

"I can't help thinking that the helmet has a bit of John Lennon's DNA on it, and that's what kind of makes it so special, in a way."

He explained that collecting The Beatles memorabilia is still considered a hot area, before saying the police hat is likely to fetch around £5,000 and £8,000 in pop and rock auctions.
