Antiques Roadshow guest speechless as rare diamond ring bought for £1 soars in value

A guest on tonight's episode of Antiques Roadshow was left completely lost for words when her ordinary ring, purchased from a charity shop for £1, soared in value.

The woman was speaking to John Benjamin about a ring she previously bought as she thought it was pretty.

She told him: "I bought it in a local charity shop and it was with the costume jewellery. It cost me £1."

"I just thought it was a nice ring with pretty glass inside," she added.

John looked at her in surprise after she told him how much she had bought the ring for, before explaining the gorgeous piece of jewellery had a "rather unusual fluted back".

He went on to tell her that the "sunburst effect" design on the back of the ring is "typical of jewellery that was made in Georgian times," dating it back to between 1790 and 1800.

John continued: "I then turned the ring over and it revealed this cluster. In the middle you've got a large, dull, grey stone. Surrounding the dull grey stone are a series of little red gems."

He then revealed the gold ring was made in India, adding: "This therefore is quite a rare little event. It then begs the question, if it's Indian of that period, what's it made of?"

"It's actually 22 carat bright yellow gold," he said, as his guest looked at him in shock.

It is worth a staggering £2,000 (BBC)

John then did a thermal test to see what the stone in the middle of the ring was, revealing it was a diamond in the middle of the ring.

"This is actually really rather rare," he revealed, before telling the guest the red stones around the outside were in fact rubies.

He said: "In other words, this is a mogul ring, that somehow it's found its way over from somewhere near the Taj Mahal, over to the charity shop here, 200 years later."

John then dropped a huge bombshell, saying: "Your £1 investment is worth £2,000."

She was speechless (BBC)

The guest was left speechless, before she told him: "Wow, I think I'll take it out of the drawer now and wear it."

Viewers of the show were left gobsmacked, with some taking to Twitter to discuss their thoughts.

Amongst the comments, one fan wrote: "#AntiquesRoadshow This gorgeous Indian Moghul 22ct diamond and ruby ring! Bought for a quid...worth £2k!!"
