Antiques Roadshow guest left in tears after damaged vase is valued at £50k

An antique owner was left in tears on Sunday's edition of Antiques Roadshow after being told her damaged vase was worth up to £50,000.

The guest had brought the imperial Chinese porcelain to Christchurch Park in Ipswich to be valued as part of the show on BBC One.

She said she had inherited the eighteenth-century vase – decorated with blue dragons and flowers on a white background – from her parents when they passed away, reports the Mirror Online.

Antique expert Alexandra Aguilar Doméracki revealed that the object was worth between £30,000-50,000, despite it having "a few stains and dots" and a crack on the base.

The vase was likely made in the eighteenth century (BBC)

The valuation left the owner stunned and in tears, saying: "I thought you were going to say £30 to £50!

"I'm nearly speechless".

Ms Doméracki said: "I am sorry. I did not want to make you cry".

She explained that the piece would likely have been "rejected" by the original imperial owners due to the blemishes.

The expert added that, without the damage, the vase would have been worth £2-4 million.

Viewers were seemingly as bowled-over as the owner, with one taking to social media to say: "£30-£50k on the Antiques Roadshow man, some dough that for a vase sat on your sideboard."

Another added: "A lady just had a Chinese Ming vase valued at £50,000 on the #AntiquesRoadshow.

"I hope that she doesn’t drop it and that she upgrades her home contents insurance to cover it!"

Antiques Roadshow airs Sundays at 7pm on BBC One.
