Antiques Roadshow guest gobsmacked at 'crazy' value of 'faded' second-hand watch

A man was left stunned when he discovered the true value of a second-hand watch he'd worn for the last 40 years.

The man appeared on the US version of Antiques Roadshow with a Rolex that his uncle gave to him in 1975.

The watch owner said: "He noticed that I wasn't wearing a watch on my wrist, so he literally took it off of his wrist, gave it to me, and that's how I acquired it," reports Daily Star.

He told Antiques Roadshow appraiser Peter Plane that he had no idea what the watch was really worth after receiving contradicting valuations.

While a Rolex store told him it was worth around $1,200 (£900), other people told him that it could be valued at more than $10,000 (£7,500).

After having a quick look over the watch, Peter told the man that he'd been very wise not to replace the worn parts when he had it serviced in the 1980s.

He explained: "Well, your particular watch, if you had it serviced by Rolex and had them replace the bezel insert here, which is all faded out, and replace the dial, polish it up and make it beautiful, your watch, today, would probably bring around $10,000 (£7,500) to $12,000 (£9,000).

"If you had it serviced."

The guest was delighted with the numbers Peter was throwing around until the appraiser revealed what it was really worth.

"Collectors like things totally original," he said.

"They want the original dial, even with the oxidation on it, even the faded bezel is very collectable.

"Today, in the retail market, your watch is worth $50,000 (£37,000)."

Laughing at the unexpected news, the Rolex owner said: "Good grief. That is absolutely stunning to me."

He added: "I think the highest I ever heard was $30,000, which I thought was crazy and outrageous, but the fact that it's worth $50,000 is startling to me."
