Antiques Roadshow guest discovers £3 charity shop purchase is worth thousands

A guest on the Antiques Roadshow had a pleasant surprise when he discovered a purchase he made for £3 in a charity shop was now worth thousands of pounds.

The man had brought in a Japanese plate for expert Lars Tharp to examine and value.

Lars informed the guest the plate belonged to a school of pottery known as Satsuma ware.

The plate consisted of a complicated scene showing soldiers wearing armour and women serving men in a very elaborate reception ceremony.

The man told Lars, he had purchased the plate for around £3 in a charity shop.

Lars said: "The architectural details are stupendous, you've got a lovely Japanese scenery in the background, the palace, and then on the eaves of this partially-glimpsed roof here, you've got these lovely elephant support there and the musical gong.

"It is hugely complicated."

Lars explained that the plate could sell for a maximum of £2,200 - but there was some bad news.

Due to some chipping on the plate, the value decreased to around £800 to 1,200.

But the man was still happy with his find, saying: "That's lovely."
