Antiques Roadshow guest amazed by true value of £30 charity shop chairs

An Antiques Roadshow guest was shocked to be told the true value of six dining chairs she'd bought from a charity shop for £5 each.

The owner of the chairs told expert Chris Yeo that she was killing time before picking her grandchildren up from school browsing in her local charity shop in Cumbria.

The owner told Chris that her friend had said she wanted to do her kitchen up with some retro wood and leather chairs and she thought the chairs would be perfect for them.

She said: "They spoke to me and I bought six, they were £5 each and the intention was to ask my friend if she'd be interested and she still doesn't know about them.

"When I got them home I gave them a quick dust down and I noticed underneath a stamp, had a look on the internet and found out they were by John Makepeace."

Expert Chris said: "John Makepeace quite simply one of the outstanding names in British furniture design of the last 50 years.

"And he's still a force to be reckoned with in the design world today."

Chris said the chairs had all the hallmarks of John Makepeace's style with the leather pads and craftmanship which "shouts quality."

Chris said: "They were made for the London headquarters of Kodak Europe in 1985 and they formed part of a comission for the executive dining suite.

"What you've got here are really significant examples of late 20th century British design, you've clearly got a good eye for it."

Chris then came to the valuation and said: "In a design sale I'd put a pre-sale estimate on these of £200-£250 each on these chairs."

The owner looked shocked and said: "Oh! Well I think that's fab."

Chris said: "Next time you go shopping take me with you."

The owner laughed and said: "You drive."
