Antiques Roadshow 'Christmas decoration' valued at £30k leaving guests speechless

Antiques Roadshow guests were left speechless as they found out a column they had been using to put Christmas lights around was worth up to £30,000.

One of the guests explained that the column had been in the family for around 120 years, but had just sat in the corner of her dining room.

Expert John Foster was on hand to explain the history behind the piece.

He said: "The column is cast from captured cannon...modelled on the Trajan Victory Column in Rome.

"The beauty of the original and the beauty of this is the detail is staggering."

Mr Foster added: "I think this is a presentation piece to someone of note, who was involved in some way.

"And that makes it that bit more special."

The guest said: "He is part of the family. You know, poor boy, fairy lights around the column every Christmas."

Mr Fost said: "Because it's a real statement piece, it is a tricky one to value, but I would say easily at auction, comfortably around £20,000 to £30,000."

Stunned, the guest said: "Oooh. That's very nice."
