Anti-vax protesters chanted at pupils on their way for Covid tests

Pupils arriving at a school for Covid tests were chanted at by anti-vax protesters.

The incident happened on Thursday morning when youngsters from King's Leadership Academy in Bolton had gone to the Essa Academy site to have their PCR tests.

The tests are being done on students in the area because of concerns over the rapid spread of the B.1.617.2 strain of coronavirus, often called the Indian variant.

The school is in Great Lever, one of the problem areas highlighted along with Deane and Rumworth.

A small group of protesters shouted at the pupils, urging them not to get vaccinated.

Parents at King's Leadership, where yesterday we reported 200 pupils are isolating following a positive case, received a letter from school detailing the incident.

The email to parents says: "We are writing to inform you that whilst we were taking students for their PCR testing at ESSA Academy this morning there were a small number of protesters at the site. Some of these protesters unfortunately chose to chant towards our students.

"Please be assured that all students were safe and supervised at all times, there was a high level of staff presence, alongside security at the ESSA site and police."

They said Public Health Bolton and the police 'have been fully informed of the situation', adding: "All students are back safely at school, any children upset by this have been spoken to by staff. However, for any children who continue to be concerned, please inform us and a member of our pastoral team will continue to support them."

The 200 pupils who are isolating from the school are in six Year 8 classes and now won't be able to return until after the May half term break.
