Anti-vaccine group's hoax email mistakenly sent out to school parents

A Nottinghamshire school issued an anti-vaccine group's letter to parents after it falsely used the NHS logo.

Shirebrook Academy, Mansfield, received a am email on Monday, September 27, which appeared to be from the health service asking for a form to be circulated to parents.

The form related to consent for the Covid vaccine for 12-15 year olds.

The school has now issued a statement online urging parents to disregard the contents of the letter after its origins came to light.

The school tweeted about the incident, which read: "Yesterday we received what appeared to be a legitimate email request from the NHS to circulate a form relating to consent for the covid-19 vaccine for 12-15 year olds.

"It has now become apparent that this was a hoax. Please disregard its contents."

Shirebrook Academy then responded to a question under the tweet and added: "Yes, please disregard it, it is a hoax distributed by an anti-vaccine group using the NHS logo illegally."

Mark Cottingham, principal of Shirebrook Academy, said: “We received an email which appeared to be sent to us by the NHS and, believing it to be genuine, we sent it onto our parents and carers.

"As soon as it became apparent that the email was a hoax, we used all of our communication channels to further advise them to disregard the information immediately.

“We understand that the same email was also sent to schools across the country.

"We are sorry if anyone is confused by the misinformation and encourage parents and carers to visit our website for the accurate information from Derbyshire Community Health Service, who are responsible for administering the vaccine."
