Anti-lockdown protest set to march through Edinburgh over coronavirus restrictions

An anti-lockdown protest is set to march through Edinburgh, with hundreds saying they will attend to call for an end to coronavirus restrictions.

Organisers have branded the demo as "saving Scotland", with over 400 people responding to say they would be attending the event on social media.

A Facebook group set up to organise the march has attracted several discussions about discredited conspiracy theories related to the virus.

The protest is scheduled to take place on 4 September at 1pm, with organisers asking people to gather at Arthur's Seat before they march to the Scottish Parliament building.

An organiser from the group said around 500 people had indicated interest in attending, but they expected many more with people looking to bring family members and friends.

Mass gatherings are still banned under measures put in place by the government to help curb the spread of the virus.

It follows a similar protest in May , when a small number of people gathered at Holyrood to protest the restrictions put in place by government.

Eyewitnesses reported that only around 15 people had attended the event, which took place at the height of lockdown.

Nicola Sturgeon joined Police Scotland in asking people not to attend to protect their health and prevent the spread of the virus.
