Anti-lockdown mass protest to take place this weekend as organisers refuse to settle for 'new normal'

Another anti-lockdown protest is set to take place this weekend as organisers refuse to settle for a 'new normal.'

A poster, which has been shared on social media, is encouraging people to join a mass gathering on Saturday at a south Manchester park.

Creators of the event have criticised the UK government as having "one rule for them, and one rule for us."

The flier, which was shared with the M.E.N, said: "All faith has been lost in our government. It is quite clear that there is one rule for them and one rule for us.

"So why should we trust what they say about coronavirus?

"They have taken our freedom and it is time once again to show that the people still have power.

"The lockdown is wrong and we should not settle for a new normal. So come along an be part of this mass gathering."

Mass gatherings are still not allowed under the government's coronavirus lockdown rules.

This weekend's planned protest is the second of its kind in Greater Manchester in the last few weeks.

A number of protesters gathered in Platt Fields Park in Fallowfield on Saturday 16 May to argue against the development of a coronavirus vaccine.

Others said they were to there to criticise the government's handling of lockdown arrangements. One woman said she did not believe a virus even existed.

Several police officers were present in the park, close to the lake, to monitor the activity.

It is not known how many people attended throughout the day but police said it was ‘a small number’.

No arrests were made and the gathering finished at around 3pm, Greater Manchester Police said.

Hundreds of M.E.N readers took to social media to express their shock at the protesters’ behaviour.

Temperatures are expected to reach 23 degrees this Celsius this Saturday, with many families likely to head out to parks across the region.

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted about the latest protest plans, and what measures are set to be put in place to protect the public.
