Anti-lockdown activists set to hold protest in Old Market Square this weekend

An anti-lockdown protest is set to go ahead in Nottingham city centre this weekend.

According to a flyer the Midlands Freedom Rally will take place this Saturday, October 3, in Old Market Square at 1pm.

A message on the flyer said: "Don't stand by, stand up. Be a part of the change you wish to see. We do not consent.

"Stop new normal, no lockdowns, no health passports, no Covid vax programmes."

Speakers include Jeremy Corbyn's brother Piers Corbyn and Andrew Johnson.

In September, a protester who demanded an end to lockdown, social distancing and vaccinations clashed with police in Old Market Square.

John Neale, from Carlton, was one of many people who attended the 'Covid-19 Truth Tour', during which protesters told the public that the virus is a "scam".

Protesters also gathered in their thousands in London's Trafalgar Square last Saturday where arrests were made after scenes turned violent.

Nottinghamshire Police Inspector Paul Gummer said: “Nottinghamshire Police has made contact and encouraged the organisers of Saturday’s protest to ensure that it is being organised in line with the Government’s Covid-19 secure guidance.

“The right to lawful protest is key part of any democracy, with current restrictions requiring that they are held safely and in line with the Government’s guidance. Nottinghamshire Police will uphold and facilitate people’s right to protest safely.”

City Council Leader, Cllr David Mellen, said: “While everyone has a democratic right to protest, anything in the midst of a global pandemic that’s killed over one million people which sows doubt or confusion in people’s minds is not just unhelpful but potentially dangerous. We urge everyone to continue following the basic guidance of ‘hands, face, space’ and the rule of six, to help stop the spread of this deadly disease.”
