Anti-knife activist 'disgusted' after council fines him hundreds of pounds over leaflets

The Binning Knives Saves Lives campaign was set up by Courtney Barrett, centre

A knife campaigner who has taken hundreds of blades off the streets today said he was “disgusted” after being fined over stickers advertising his service.

Courtney Barrett, 45, founder of Binning Knives Saves Lives, was fined more than £600 by Waltham Forest council.

Campaigners visit estates where they hand residents a leaflet and stickers to spread the word.

Mr Barrett said they were trying to make the streets safer, and “now we’re being penalised for it”. He added it would not deter him.

The council has since revoked the fines after Mr Barrett made representations to the council, but warned the campaigner he will face fresh penalties if the “flyposting” is repeated.

It said it took “fly-posting seriously” and money that could be used for other services was being spent on cleaning up.
