Anti-fascist group to hold Glasgow rally days after loyalist thugs and asylum seeker activists clash

An anti-fascist and anti-racism group has organised a demonstration set to take place in Glasgow this weekend.

Stand Up To Racism is calling on the Scottish public to send the message that Glasgow “opposes racism, fascism and bigotry”.

The rally follows “disgraceful scenes” in George Square on Wednesday night, June 17, when loyalist groups clashed with pro-asylum seekers.

Violence erupted after a 'protect the Cenotaph' event was held by the National Defence League just before a planned No Evictions Glasgow group demonstration.

Organisers for No Evictions Glasgow, who were campaigning for the rights of asylum seekers, were forced to evacuate the square midway through their rally declaring the area 'unsafe'.

Officers from Police Scotland were forced to move in to separate the two groups of protesters as tensions threatened to boil over in the city centre for the second time in a few days.

Six men were arrested following the incident.

Saturday's demo has been widely advertised across social media (Facebook)

Following the clashes the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: “Disgraceful scenes in Glasgow tonight. Racist thugs shame Scotland."

While Chief Superintendent Hazel Hendren, Divisional Commander for Greater Glasgow, said: “The disgraceful scenes we have witnessed recently in George Square, Glasgow, are completely unacceptable."

On the event’s Facebook page it says: “We want to reiterate our opposition to racism and the treatment of asylum seekers in our city who are being abandoned, made destitute and treated like dirt by the UK Govt’s Hostile Environment.

“On UN World Refugee Day we say it loud and clear—refugees are welcome here.

“At a time when the anti-racist movement is growing in size and strength we need to continue to work to grow it, put down roots in every area, and build with everyone saying that Black Lives Matter, from trade unions to faith groups and all equality campaigners to defeat racism in Scotland.”
