Anti-eviction protesters forced to leave as police close off George Square over safety fears

Anti-eviction protesters have been forced to leave George Square over safety fears amid a large police presence in Glasgow city centre.

No Evictions Glasgow, who are fighting against the eviction of around 300 people onto the streets of our city, had planned to gather at the landmark this evening at 6pm.

However the group have had to leave the square amid reports and social media footage of counter-protests from those involved in the National Defence League (NDL).

The group commented on Facebook shortly after 6pm: "We are unable to continue the demonstration safely.

"People are leaving George Square now.

"Please do not attempt to join the demonstration now. Stay safe with friends. Contact us here if you need support or more info."

A bulletin from Glasgow City Council's Traffic Control team confirmed that George Square was closed to traffic "due to an ongoing protest".

The square has since been reopened fully to traffic.

Amid news that the National Defence League was planning a counter-protest at tonight - later thought to have been cancelled by the group - Chief Superintendent Mark Hargreaves said earlier today: "We are aware of planned demonstrations in the George Square area this evening, and while we will police them appropriately and proportionately, our clear advice is that people should not attend these events, but to find alternate methods to protest in order to minimise any risks to public safety or health.

"We would encourage everyone to continue to follow the Scottish Government's regulations and guidance to aid the collective effort to protect the NHS and save lives by preventing the virus from spreading."

Glasgow Live has contacted Police Scotland for further comment.
