Anti-discrimination group Kick It Out condemn 'anti-Irish and sectarian' abuse of James McClean

James McClean has been backed by anti-discrimination group Kick It Out following 'anti-Irish and sectarian abuse' during Stoke City's clash with Millwall.

The Stoke winger featured in his side's 0-0 draw at the Bet365 Stadium last Saturday.

Republic of Ireland star McClean has been targeted by fans of several Championship clubs this season, both in the stands and on social media.

Barnsley have already been charged by the FA, while Huddersfield are conducting an internal investigation into supporter abuse during their 5-2 New Year's Day defeat to Stoke.

Kick It Out's statement read: "James McClean was once again subjected to disgraceful anti-Irish and sectarian abuse this weekend.

"We have informed The FA so they can investigate but we reiterate - the abuse he continues to receive is absolutely unacceptable and shames our game.

"We have been in constant contact with Stoke City and James, as we continue to offer our full support.

"Greatest action must be taken by the authorities to safeguard his and his family's wellbeing, because the current situation cannot continue."

Stoke have come out strongly against what they described as 'vile anti-social chanting'.

A club statement read: "We believe the chanting to be discriminatory and, like any other hate crime, there is no place for it in society and the perpetrators should be held accountable.

"As a club we have always supported James and will continue to do so."
