Anti-Brexit group launches campaign to fly EU flag above Leeds Town Hall

An anti-Brexit campaign group is calling on the council to hoist the European Union flag above Leeds Town Hall.

Leeds For Europe, who are vocal supporters of the EU, have pointed to similar examples in other UK cities where the blue and yellow flag has been flown above famous city centre landmarks.

Liverpool flew the EU flag above its Cunard Building council offices on January 31, the day Britain formally left the European Union. Meanwhile, the EU colours are still being flown at the Holyrood parliamentary building in Edinburgh.

However, Liverpool's Brexit referendum result saw 58 per cent of voters there choose to remain in the EU. In Scotland, the support was even stronger, with 62 per cent of people opting to remain.

In Leeds though, it was a far tighter call, and we have since become known as the '50-50 city' after a split vote in the 2016 referendum.

Nonetheless, Leeds for Europe have urged Leeds City Council to take a leaf from Liverpool's book with "a small act of defiance".

Richard Wilson, chair of Leeds for Europe, said: "Leeds United’s Premier League promotion makes us rivals to Liverpool and Everton on the football field.

"But we are on the same team when it comes to recognising that it is in Britain’s best interest to work as closely as possible with our immediate, like-minded neighbours and largest trading partners."

The campaign group are asking people to lobby their local councillor to indicate that Leeds "remains a great European city".

"Divisions are for football," said Mr Wilson. "Flying the European flag would show that Leeds, like Liverpool, was and remains a great European city.

"It would be a small act of defiance to the Leave elite in London - and their millionaire backers – who have so far failed to deliver their much-trumpeted ‘oven-ready’ Brexit."
