Anti-5G campaigners who protested in St Pauls say they won't stop

Following the protests against 5G in St Pauls on the weekend, the organiser has said she won’t stop “until the 5G tower comes down”.

Campaigners took part in an anti-5G protest in Bristol’s inner city suburb yesterday (August 23).

Bristol is among the British cities where some phone users can access the improved data speeds brought by 5G.

They have been holding regular meetings in the area on the subject of objecting against several applications put in for 5G transmitters in St Pauls.

Their worries at the protest were around their health and well being, the effects on wildlife and the proximity of the 5G mast to a school and sports centre.

Nwanyi Aduke, who lives a few streets down from the new 5G mast and also works at the Kuumba Centre said: “What I want people to understand is that we won’t stop lobbying on Newfoundland Road until the mast comes down. The tower is very significant because it sets up opportunities for more masts to potentially go up”

“We’ve decided we’re not gonna sit down. It’s a suspicious situation and if we had been consulted the mast wouldn't have gone up in the first place.”

The St Pauls resident is among those calling for more research about 5G before the implementation of masts in the area.

The protest was spearheaded by the Kuumba Centre and supported by local residents, The Malcolm X Centre and Stop 5G.

The planning application by WHP Telecoms was approved by Bristol City Council in September 2019 and 18 objections were made.

The planning group has been approached for a statement by BristolLive, but we are still awaiting a response.
