Anthony Stokes hungry to revive career in Britain after four spells abroad in two years

Former Ireland international Anthony Stokes is hoping to reignite his career in Britain after spells in three different countries over the last two years.

The Dubliner was released by Scottish club Hibernian in January 2018 and has endured two spells in Iran, one in Turkey and Greece since.

The striker is back in Dublin after his most recent time in Iran was cut short by the coronavirus crisis, ending a planned six-month stint.

And with the time away under his belt, the 31-year-old claims that he's fed up chasing a career outside the British Isles and wants to play at a high level again in England or Scotland.

"The last few years I have done the whole abroad thing, I have had enough of it, it's hard, hard work," said Stokes in an Instagram interview with former Hibs team-mate Marvin Bartley.

"I have the hunger more so now. I will definitely be going back to Scotland or the UK, where I end up I don't know."

After his Hibs release, Stokes headed to Athens to join Apollon Smyrni - but only played for games for the Greek club.

He then joined Iranian side Tractor Sazi, but a dispute arose around unpaid wages that cut the spell short - Stokes is currently awaiting a pay-off after he took a case to FIFA.

He signed for Adana Demirspor last summer but left the club in November after making just six appearances, before returning to Iran to play for Persepolis in January.
