Anthony Stokes caught up in bitter FIFA dispute as former club demand ex-Celtic star is suspended

Striker Anthony Stokes is at the centre of a messy FIFA dispute 24 hours after signing for Iranian side Persepolis.

The former Hibs and Celtic star returned to Iran to sign for the Tehran club a year after he quit Tractor Club.

However, Tractor Club have made an official complaint to FIFA because he walked out on them without settling his contract.

And they have demanded that world football's governing body suspend him until he and his new club reach agreement with them

Tractor Club director, Mustafa Karandish, said: "If a player walks out of an existing contract with a reason and without a termination, he cannot simply sign for another club in the same country without compensation.

"We intend to take this to FIFA and insist the player is suspended and compensation is paid to us. The process may be lengthy, but it is important to make an example.

"You cannot just leave a club and sign for another club in Iran for nothing."

Stokes signed a six-month deal with the Persian Gulf Pro League champions, who insist he was a free agent and is set to make his debut for his new club away to Sanat Naft on Saturday in Abadan unless FIFA intervenes.

He said: "I know what a big club this is and I can't wait to get started and play for Persepolis."
