Anthony Rizzo makes pitching debut, Victor Caratini also takes the mound in Cubs' 7-1 loss

CHICAGO _ Anthony Rizzo got his long-awaited wish to pitch in a major league game.

But it came with two out in the ninth inning of the Cubs' 7-1 loss to the Diamondbacks.

Rizzo, playing in his 997th regular season game, induced A.J. Pollock to fly to center field on the second of two pitches before running off the field.

Rizzo relieved backup catcher Victor Caratini, who threw a scoreless inning in his second pitching appearance in four days.

That summed up the misfortunes of the Cubs, who never recovered from a five-run first inning off starting pitcher Luke Farrell.

Jeff Mathis capped the five-run rally with a two-run double as the Diamondbacks sent nine men to the plate before the Cubs batted.

Paul Goldschmidt smacked his 22nd home run with one out in the second. Goldschmidt has hit nine home runs in his last 19 games against the Cubs.

The Cubs completed a five-game series against the Cardinals in four days but failed to get any length out of Farrell, who was pulled after 3 1/3 innings.

Caratini relieved Randy Rosario in the eighth and induced Jon Jay to fly to right to end the inning.

The Cubs' lineup featured Albert Almora Jr. in the third spot as one of seven right/switch-hitting position players. Almora hit a single in the fourth but was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double for the second out with the Cubs trailing 6-0 at the time.

The Cubs were a National League-best 17-6 against left-handed starters entering Monday's game.
