Anthony Rendon Questions Angels’ Assessment of Severity of His Leg Injury

Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon told reporters on Friday that a doctor—who was not assigned by the team and is the fifth that he’s seen overall—diagnosed him with a fractured tibia. Rendon has not played in more than two months as he recovers on the 60-Day IL.

On July 4, Rendon sustained what was reported as a bone bruise when he hit a foul ball off his left leg. Now, in what appears as an injury that is worse than initially stated, the 33-year-old told reporters that he was unsure why the Angeles labeled his injury as a bone bruise.

“You got to ask them [the Angels],” Rendon said, per ESPN.

Rendon’s latest injury update comes after the two-time Silver Slugger winner has spent multiple weeks not providing a real response or dodging the question about the status of his injury. However, prior to Friday’s news, ESPN reported that four doctors initially consulted Rendon about his injury. Of the four, two doctors were chosen by Los Angeles and the other two were selected by the third baseman. The fifth doctor finally diagnosed the fractured tibia.

Even more, Rendon shared that he received the fractured tibia diagnosis when the Angels opened a three-game road series on Aug. 11 against the Astros. Despite questions looming, Scott Boras—Rendon’s agent—stated that his client and the team’s medical staff remain “in line” on a treatment plan, per ESPN.

Rendon has played in only 43 games this season. In his fourth season in Los Angeles, Rendon has registered only 200 appearances with the Angels and has failed to play in more than 58 games in a single campaign with the franchise.
