Anthony Patterson opens up on Sunderland recall, Notts County return and penalty heroics

Sunderland's Anthony Patterson was the hero for Notts County as he saved a penalty for the home side as they defeated Hollywood-backed Wrexham this weekend.

Patterson was starting his second loan spell at the club after he began the season playing for the National League club before a goalkeeping injury situation at Sunderland saw him recalled to the Stadium of Light.

With Ron-Thorben Hoffman and Lee Burge both fit, he was able to return to County for more experience and the loanee told the club's official website he was 'buzzing' to have contributed with the penalty save.

"Obviously the penalty got awarded and I picked my side and went for it. I'm buzzing to save it. It's a crucial time in the game at 2-1."

Patterson also spoke about the situation where he was recalled from his loan, which saw him go from playing games to returning to Sunderland to be a backup.

He said: "I got recalled and I knew it was as cover as the goalkeeper got injured. I’m buzzing to be back playing. I really enjoyed it the first time. I’m happy to be back and looking forward to more good performances.

"I really liked it here so it was a case of once the goalkeeper was back fit again I wanted to get back here and get back playing."

Asked what he hoped for from his time in the National League, Patterson said, "I'm here to play games and hopefully get this team promoted."

The 21-year-old has played 9 games in the league for County, conceding 11 goals and keeping 3 clean sheets within that time.
