Anthony Ogogo has rib removed to rebuild nose in latest surgery attempt

Former middleweight boxer Anthony Ogogo has had a rib removed in order to try to rebuild his nose following a fight against Craig Cunningham back in 2016.

Ogogo lost the fight in Birmingham in the eighth round and he has not returned to the ring since having sustained a broken eye socket, officially retiring from the sport in March.

The 30-year-old, who won bronze in the 2012 London Olympics, has since been a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing and has worked as a pundit, but now he has undergone further surgery in order to try to improve his vision and 'quality of life'.

Posting a video to his Instagram story, Ogogo said: "Yesterday I had an operation on my eye, ninth one, to try to get a little bit more vision out of my eye.

"Not to get back in the boxing ring, no, those days are gone, I know that but just for quality of life.

"I had an operation on my nose today, because it's badly fractured and I can't breathe properly they're trying to straighten it because I keep getting throat infections. They had to cut me open and use some rib, some cartilage and some bone from my rib to make my nose!"

After the injuries sustained in the fight with Cunningham, which was Ogogo's first ever pro defeat, he was registered as blind and lost his driving license, and said that his eye "basically exploded."

Following his retirement in March Ogogo released a long, emotional statement, which finished with the words: "I’ve been through a lot in my career. I’ve had 17 operations and suffered every pain imaginable. I’ve won, lost, cried and hurt. But if you were to ask me would I do it again? In a heartbeat. I love this game."
