Anthony Martial's three incidents at Man Utd that caused fury and sparked exit plan

Anthony Martial's time at Manchester United looks to be coming to an end, six-and-a-half years after joining the club from Monaco.

The French forward has seen his opportunities limited this season, with Barcelona, Juventus and Sevilla emerging as potential transfer destinations.

Talk of a new club has grown after Martial's agent said the 26-year-old was unhappy at United and suggested he could be on the move as soon as January.

A departure would bring to an end a stint with plenty of high points - including more than 70 goals - albeit one which has seen the player's importance to the team diminish.

We have gone back through Martial's time in England and identified three incidents that have paved the way for what is looking increasingly likely to be a January departure.

Fined for attending his son's birth

Martial had started strongly after joining from Monaco, ending the 2015-16 season as the club's top scorer with 17 goals in all competitions.

Things changed after the appointment of Jose Mourinho, though, and issues during the Portuguese manager's time in charge - as well as the arrival of other strikers - meant he did not pass that goal tally in a single season until the former Chelsea boss had been replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

One of the notable issues during that period came in summer 2018, when Martial was fined two weeks' wages by Mourinho for leaving United's pre-season tour. The reason? He wanted to be at the birth of his son.

When quizzed on whether Martial would be a part of his squad for that season, Mourinho said "I don't know", though the Frenchman was eventually welcomed back into the fold.

Losing the number 9 shirt

Martial didn't appear to suffer from any additional pressure associated with the number nine shirt in his first United season, scoring on his debut and wasting little time surpassing the goal tally of previous holder Radamel Falcao.

The following season, though, the jersey was taken away from him and handed to new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

After moving to number 11, Martial endured a difficult season in front of goal, and it was Romelu Lukaku who became United's new number nine when Ibrahimovic relinquished the shirt.

Former United and France defender Patrice Evra would later claim Martial was "really let down" by the club when they took the shirt number away from him.

'It's not like I'm going to say Martial's been not playing well because of that number shirt, but it started from there," he told Sky Sports in 2020.

Losing his starting place

Ralf Rangnick has said he sympathises with Martial (PA)

The 2019-20 season marked a return to form for Martial, with 17 league goals putting him in the top 10 for the entire Premier League.

However, things haven't been quite as easy since then, and he has only scored once this term after seeing his minutes limited with just two Premier League starts to his name.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has sympathised with the player, saying "I think in a way this is understandable [that he wants to move on], I could follow his thoughts, but on the other hand, it’s also important to see the situation of the club."

With a World Cup coming up less than a year from now, though, Martial wants to be playing regularly - especially after being left out of France's squad in 2018.

After various other issues during his time at United, a simple lack of game time could end up being the final straw.
