Anthony Martial has Manchester United fans talking for the wrong reasons despite scoring for France

Anthony Martial has endured a difficult time at Manchester United - and his latest outing for France has proved to be a bittersweet occasion, too.

Having missed out on a place at Euro 2020 through injury, the 25-year-old striker was recalled by Les Bleus for this ongoing international break.

Martial, who is set to fall down the pecking order at Old Trafford - following Cristiano Ronaldo's sensational return to the club - had only netted once for France prior to kick-off against Ukraine tonight.

The 25-cap international marked his recall to the line-up with a goal in that 1-1 draw during World Cup qualifying.

However, after teaming-up with fellow United player Paul Pogba later in the game, Martial proceeded to pass up a golden opportunity to make it a double - hitting straight at the goalkeeper when some suggested he ought to have finished with ease.

It was a chance that might well have sealed the points for World Cup holders France in Group D.

Here are a selection of comments posted by United supporters - about that missed attempt - on social media:

@ajmufctalk said: "Ronaldo goes around the keeper in that position."

@cryptaurean posted: "The space closed up quickly. IMO he could have shot earlier, I think that's what Ronaldo would have done."

@multipletime added: "When it's Ronaldo at the end of that ball from Pogba..."

@moorerice_here said: "He side-foots every ball and they almost never end up in the corner."

@passingdemtears posted: "Look at the bright side, at least he's learning movement from [Edinson] Cavani."

@NeeL_7 added: "Pogba making these passes to CR7!"

@o2_gramm said: "Just go around the keeper!"

@Error13021 posted: "We need his confidence back, those kind of chances would've been put to bed by Martial in the past."

@UTDFaithfuls added: "Btw, that was a great run. He needs to keep doing more of that to get the chances."
